What are disaster relief tents, and why do specifications matter?

When an earthquake hits or a conflict displaces thousands of families overnight, the first thing people need after water and food is shelter. Disaster relief tents are the standard response. They go up fast, they ship on cargo planes, and they keep families alive through heat, rain, and freezing temperatures.

Not all tents are the same, though. The ones used by UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency), ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross), and IFRC have specific technical standards that a tent has to meet before any agency will buy it. These standards exist because a tent that leaks in a monsoon or collapses under snow is worse than no tent at all — it creates a false sense of safety.

The main specs cover waterproofing (canvas must be treated and tested to withstand sustained heavy rain), wind resistance (the structure must hold in winds up to 72 km/h), UV degradation (canvas breaks down in direct sunlight, so treatment matters), ventilation (sealed tents in hot climates cause heat stroke), and minimum floor area (at least 3.5 square meters per person). Every BNC relief tent is manufactured to meet these standards. We have been doing this since 1994.

We supply our tents to UNHCR, UNICEF, UNDP, ICRC, OXFAM, Muslim Aid, ADRA, and dozens of other organizations working in disaster zones from Syria to Pakistan to East Africa. Our manufacturing facility in Karachi runs dedicated production lines for relief tents, which means we keep ready stock available at all times.

Relief tent models we manufacture

Each model meets international humanitarian standards. All use cotton canvas (not polyester) because it performs better in both extreme heat and extreme cold.

How we manufacture disaster relief tents

Our factory in Karachi has been producing tents since 1994. The manufacturing process for a relief tent starts with raw cotton canvas — we use 380 GSM (grams per square meter) fabric that gets treated in-house for waterproofing, rot resistance, and fungus resistance. This treatment is applied before cutting, not after, because post-cut treatment misses seam edges.

Canvas is cut on industrial tables using patterns specific to each tent model. The pieces go to sewing lines where operators stitch them on heavy-duty industrial machines designed for thick fabric. Seams on relief tents get double-stitched and then sealed with waterproof tape, because a tent that leaks at the seams is useless in a monsoon.

Steel poles are galvanized (zinc-coated to prevent rust) and hot-dip treated for extra durability. Pegs, guy-ropes, and tensioners are included with every tent. We pack everything into labeled bales that are sized to fit standard cargo pallets and aircraft doors — this matters more than you might think when you are trying to get tents onto a C-130 at 2 AM during a disaster response.

Every finished tent gets inspected for material quality, seam integrity, waterproofing, and dimensional accuracy before it goes to our warehouse. We keep a rolling stock of the most commonly ordered models (family tent, UNHCR relief tent, winterized tent) so we can ship within 24 to 72 hours when urgent orders come in.

For larger orders or custom specifications, manufacturing lead time is typically 2-4 weeks depending on quantity. We have the capacity to scale production rapidly when needed — which happens more often than anyone would like.

Why organizations buy from BNC

We are the manufacturer

Not a trading company, not a middleman. We own the factory, the machines, and the production lines. This means better quality control and lower prices. When something needs to change, we change it the same day.

24/72-hour delivery

We keep ready stock in Karachi. Our facility is near both air and sea ports. When UNHCR calls at midnight because a flood just displaced 50,000 people, we can have tents on a plane by morning.

ISO certified, UN registered

We are ISO certified and registered as a supplier with UNHCR, UNICEF, and UNDP. We work directly with ICRC, Red Cross, OXFAM, Muslim Aid, and ADRA. These are not just logos on our website — they are purchase orders in our files.

30+ years doing this

BNC was founded in 1994. In 30 years we have supplied tents for conflicts, earthquakes, floods, and refugee crises across the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and beyond. We know what works in the field because our tents are in the field.

Custom manufacturing

Common questions about disaster relief tents

What specifications do disaster relief tents need to meet?
Relief tents typically need to meet UNHCR, ICRC, or IFRC standards. These cover waterproofing (minimum 350 GSM treated canvas), wind resistance (72 km/h sustained), UV protection, ventilation, and minimum 3.5 sqm floor area per person. We manufacture to all three standards. If you need tents to a specific national standard instead, we can do that too.
How fast can you deliver?
We keep ready stock in Karachi. Standard models (family tent, UNHCR relief tent, winterized tent) can be airlifted anywhere in the world within 24 to 72 hours. Custom orders take 2-4 weeks depending on quantity and specs. Our factory is near Karachi's international airport and seaport, which keeps logistics fast.
Why cotton canvas instead of synthetic?
Cotton canvas breathes better in hot climates (reduces interior heat), provides better insulation in cold weather, and is more tear-resistant than polyester at equivalent weight. It also does not produce toxic fumes if it catches fire. The trade-off is weight — canvas tents are heavier than synthetic ones. For disaster relief, where tents stay up for months or years, the durability advantage of canvas outweighs the weight penalty.
How much do they cost?
Pricing depends on model, quantity, and shipping. As a direct manufacturer we offer factory pricing — no middlemen, no agent fees. Contact us with your specific requirements (model, quantity, destination, timeline) and we will send a detailed quote within 24 hours.
Do you make winterized tents for extreme cold?
Yes. Our winterized model has double-layer canvas with a quilted thermal inner lining, rated to -20C. It includes a stove jack (for heating) and adjustable snow-flap ventilation. These are commonly deployed in camps in Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, Nepal, and Central Asia during winter months.
Can you put our organization's logo on the tents?
Yes. We do custom branding — your organization's logo printed or stenciled on the canvas. This is common for UN agencies and larger NGOs who need visual identification on their shelters. Let us know the artwork and placement and we will include it in your quote.
